With friends like these…

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

…who needs to go to college? Well, we did, and this is how we end a party. Sometime we do it to get people to leave. But this night, everyone but us, my sister and the two DJs were gone.
Music was added for dramatic effect.

Four months in Jackson

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

I ended a four-month internship today at the Jackson Citizen Patriot. I had a great time working with the staff in the newsroom and covering cops
Here are some of my favorite stories that I wrote there.
Purse stolen from woman at Jackson apartment complex that contained a toy Chihuahua recovered; dog and owner reunited
The call came [...]

All you ever think about is sex (in da club)

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

After a break, here comes the rest of the Sparks rarities. Tonight, we go into orbit with “Sparks in Outer Space.”
“Mini Skirted” is a nice commentary on the mini skirt. Remember how much of a shock the “less is more” skirt was in ‘63. The alternative version of  ”All You Ever Think About is Sex” [...]

is there more to life (than dancing?)

Monday, May 17th, 2010

possibly inspired by the track posted two days ago, “Dancing is Dangerous” and “Is There More to Life than Dancing” is the awnswer to sparks disco. Yes, the whole No. 1 in Heaven album is dancetasktik, but the two selections (that fade into one another) are choice.
All else that I will say is that the [...]

“Cherry”—Kalamazoo is an Ivy League town?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

I think I fell asleep in the classroom, the same classroom that Aaron Milton does in the film “Cherry,” which was filmed on campus at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, and throughout downtown Kalamazoo. The film was like an introverted “Where’s Waldo” —the audience Thursday night was looking for all the Kalamazoo landmarks they could find. [...]

You are nothing without someone next to you

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Ah, the most profound song: “Love can conquer all” — challenging (or glibbly embracing) the fact that no one can amount to anything if they are not constantly in a relationship, infatuated, or in love.
A short, sweet, possibly television theme “The Ablongs” (possibly Oblongs?) is sandwiched between the two version of Love Can Conquer All. [...]

Sparks updates to come…tomorrow

MLK

Monday, January 18th, 2010

“I have traveled the length and breadth of Alabama, Mississippi and all the other southern states. On sweltering summer days and crisp autumn mornings I have looked at the South’s beautiful churches with their lofty spires pointing heavenward. I have beheld the impressive outlines of her massive religious education buildings. Over and over I have found [...]

Living eco friendly with the new Eco Mug

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

What went into the creation of the new EcoMug?
One part environmental stewardship. One part economic savings. One part student zeal.
As some 5,000 EcoMugs are making their ways into the hands of first year students when they check in to the residence halls, it is a plan that has been in the works since [...]

Pretending to be drunk

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Last night I got wasted. Well, at least I acted like I did.
There were about six parties I was invited too - a lot of acquaintances were getting ready to move into new apartments and wanted to have one last “hurrah” in their places. It was to be a 2008-09 party revue.
Drinking at college is a [...]

WMU facing $5 million deficit

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Western Michigan University is facing a $5 million budget deficit as it enters the 2009-10 fiscal year on July 1, according to President John Dunn’s June 18 Message to the University Community.
Dunn attributed the deficit to a cut in state funding, an increase in salaries and benefits for WMU employees, growing university operating costs and [...]

Vice-President Joe Biden came to Loy Norrix High School on June 12 for the groundbreaking of the I-94 widening and Westnedge Avenue interchange reconstruction projects in Kalamazoo and Portage.
